Proposed regional airstrip development project in Kerala to improve connectivity across Idukki, Wayanad and Kasaragod

Kerala is evaluating new regional airstrips to strengthen connectivity, tourism and emergency response services.

Kerala explores airstrip development in three districts to enhance regional connectivity

The Kerala Government has commenced a techno-economic feasibility study to evaluate the development of airstrips in the districts of Idukki, Wayanad and Kasaragod as part of its efforts to strengthen regional air connectivity and improve access to remote areas.

The proposed airstrips are intended to support the operation of small aircraft and helicopters, providing faster transportation links to hilly and geographically isolated regions. The initiative is expected to enhance emergency medical services, disaster management operations and overall connectivity in areas where conventional transport infrastructure faces significant challenges.

To manage the project, the state has appointed Kerala Rail Development Corporation (KRDCL) as the project management consultant. Engineering and transport consultancy firm RITES has been engaged, in association with KIIFCON, to undertake the detailed techno-economic feasibility study following the latter’s selection through the prescribed tendering process.

The assessment will evaluate the technical viability, financial feasibility and operational requirements for establishing airstrips at the identified locations. Factors such as site suitability, infrastructure requirements, investment needs and long-term operational sustainability will form part of the study before any decision is taken on project execution.

If found feasible, the proposed airstrips are expected to improve connectivity across Kerala’s remote regions while supporting tourism, facilitating faster emergency response and strengthening the state’s overall transportation infrastructure. The initiative also reflects the government’s focus on expanding regional aviation infrastructure to improve accessibility in underserved areas.
