JSW Energy acquires MCCPL to strengthen its thermal power portfolio with the Korba power plant in Chhattisgarh

JSW Energy has acquired MCCPL to expand its thermal power generation capacity and strengthen its long-term growth strategy.

JSW Energy strengthens thermal portfolio with MCCPL acquisition

JSW Energy has expanded its thermal power portfolio through the acquisition of Maruti Clean Coal and Power Ltd (MCCPL) in a deal valued at Rs 1,410 crore. The company has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire the entire equity stake in MCCPL, further advancing its long-term capacity expansion strategy.

MCCPL owns a 300 MW thermal power plant located in Korba, Chhattisgarh. A significant portion of the plant’s generation capacity is tied to a long-term power purchase arrangement, under which 195 MW is supplied to power distribution companies in Rajasthan through PTC India. The agreement has a remaining tenure of nearly 14 years, providing stable revenue visibility.

In addition to contracted supplies, a small share of the plant’s output is sold to the Chhattisgarh distribution utility at variable cost, while the remaining capacity is marketed through the merchant power segment. The facility also benefits from assured fuel availability through a long-term coal linkage with South Eastern Coalfields Ltd, supported by allocations under the government’s SHAKTI scheme.

The acquisition is expected to strengthen JSW Energy’s thermal generation base and support its broader objective of reaching 30 GW of power generation capacity by 2030. Upon completion of the transaction, MCCPL will operate as a wholly owned subsidiary of the company.

With the addition of the Korba-based plant, JSW Energy’s installed thermal generation capacity will increase to 5,958 MW. The company’s total installed and under-development thermal portfolio will rise to 10,958 MW, further enhancing its position in India’s power sector.

The transaction is targeted for completion by the end of July 2026, subject to the necessary regulatory clearances and lender approvals.
